The importance of shipping to the early development of Port Macquarie, combined with a dangerous harbour entrance, resulted in many shipwrecks. At the Pilot’s Cottages, built in 1896, you can see salvaged items from these wrecks and many more items from the vibrant maritime history of the area. The cottages are now one of three venues of the Mid North Coast Maritime Museum. Open daily 10am to 4pm.

Tinonee, situated on the banks of the Manning River is one of the Manning Valley’s most historic villages. During the early 1900s, it was an important shipping-trade destination. The tall majestic sailing ships plying the river were once an everyday sight in Tinonee, which buzzed with commerce and industry. The Tinonee museum now celebrates and preserves that rich history. Open 10am to 2pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and Saturday from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.
